Abstract

Mies van der Rohe explored the museum project both as an architect and as a teacher, and contributed towards a new way of understanding its meaning: a space for the enjoyment of art. Although critics have already published articles about the museums that Mies created in his office, and analysed them in detail, nothing is known about the academic research he carried out on this type of building. For this reason, the purpose of this article is: to present the museum-projects that Mies supervised on the graduate programme at the IIT -specifically the final master’s theses of Daniel Brenner, Jean Lippert and Peter Carter; to carry out a comparative study of these theses, based on the concepts that Mies himself expressed in the text of the Museum for a Small City; and to explore the constant aspects that are maintained in these spaces destined for the festival of art, establishing connections between the architecture of the Mies, and that of his students.

  • Laura Lizondo Sevilla, Universitat Politècnica de València

    Laura Lizondo-Sevilla, Arquitecta por la Universitat Politècnica de València(2003). Desde 2004 ejerce como arquitecta, siendo algunos de sus proyectos premiados en diversosconcursos públicos de arquitectura. Desde 2008 es profesora a tiempo completo a en el Departamento de Proyectos Arquitectónicos de la UPV y forma parte del grupo de investigación “Arquitectura Monumental e Histórica”. En el curso 2011-2012 fue visiting scholaren la Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation, Columbia University, New York.Título de Doctora Arquitecta por la UPV con calificación de Cum laude y Mención Internacional con la tesis: “¿Arquitectura o Exposición? Fundamentos de la Arquitectura de Mies van der Rohe” (2012). Desde 2014 es Managing Editorde ‘En Blanco, Revista de Arquitectura’.Durante el curso 2015-2016 fue visiting scholar and professoren Central Saint Martins, University of Arts of London. Ha publicado los resultados de su investigación acerca de Mies van der Rohe en numerosas revistas de investigación de alto impacto en el ámbito de la arquitectura, entre otras: ACE, EGA, PPA, Revista 180, ARQ. Santiago de Chile, VLC Arquitectura y Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians.

    José Santatecla Fayos, Arquitecto por la Universitat Politécnica de València(1986). Desde 1988 es profesor asociado del Departamento de Proyectos Arquitectónicos dela UPV. Título de Doctor Arquitecto por la UPV con la tesis “De la esencia de la arquitectura a lo esencial del espacio. Forma y concepto en la arquitectura de Mies van der Rohe” (2005). Premio delConsejo Social de la UPV a la mejor tesis doctoral del área dearquitectura (2006). En su ejercicio profesional ha ganado numerosos concursos públicos de arquitectura. Obra publicada en la monografía “Santatecla arquitectos, arquitectura 2002-2011” y en numerosos capítulos de libros y revistas nacionales e internacionales.Entre los premios obtenidos cabe destacar el “Premio de Arquitectura COACV 2007-2008-2009” otorgado por el Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de la Comunidad de Valencia a la mejor obra de arquitectura. Desde 2008 es investigador en el “Grupo de Investigación en Arte y Arquitectura Contemporánea”. Su investigaciónn secentra en la arquitectura de Mies van der Rohe, publicada en revistas de prestigio internacional, tales como EGA, ACE, Revista 180, ARQ. Santiago de Chile,PPA y VLC Arquitectura.

  • Zaida Garcia-Requejo, University of A Coruña

    Zaida Garcia-Requejo, Arquitecta y Máster en Rehabilitación Arquitectónica por la Universidade da Coruña(2013). Actualmente está desarrollando su tesis doctoral sobre la colaboración entre Mies van der Rohe y el ingeniero estructural Frank Kornacker. Ha sido investigadora visitante en el Illinois Institute of Technologyde Chicago en los años 2015 y 2016, en el Museum of Modern Artde Nueva York y en elArt Institute of Chicagoen 2017 y en la University of Michigan en 2018. Fruto de su investigación ha publicado en la revista En Blanco. Revista de Arquitecturay ha participado en el simposio Chicago Schools: Authors, Audiences, and Historyorganizado por el programa de doctorado de la Escuela de Arquitectura del IIT en colaboración con la 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennal. Desde 2016 es profesora interina a tiempo parcial en el área de Composición del Departamento de Proyectos Arquitectónicos, Urbanismo y Composición de la UDC. Forma parte del Grupo de Investigación en Composición Arquitectónica y Patrimonio (GICAP) y del Grupo de Innovación Educativa en Patrimonio Compartido.
