Abstract

This paper deals with languages and cultures in the context of monolingualism and multilingualism. I shall come into terms with an important distinction and decision: It is necessary to distinguish at this stage the ethos of monolingualism and bilingualism from that of multilingualism. A monolingual identity stretches from an idiolect to a language. A multilingual identity extends from the language of intimacy through the language of proximity to languages of regional, national and international identification. As the successive layers of the onion of languages and culture are peeled off, a complex network of relations can be easily observed. In this scenario, each language is representative of an overarching culture. In this sense, each language can be seen as the medium of more than one culture, as each culture can find expression through more than one language.
