Visual cultures of climate change in the Spanish press: the case of the ABC

Abstract

Research has reliably shown that the written press is a key source of information on those issues related to climate change for the public. Proper communication of the topic through images becomes necessary for its understanding. While graphical representations with data have proven useful in understanding the complex dynamics of the atmosphere, photographs have often been used to visualize possible impacts of climate change. This article analyzes how the issue of climate change is communicated using visual elements, by a widely circulated newspaper in Spain, such as the ABC. The volume of articles that incorporate images belongs to four different periods. These periods coincide with the years of publication of the first four reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). These moments were chosen because they were considered key to the development and understanding of this environmental problem. The visual elements are used, like the texts, to give a partial and directed vision by the author (in this case the means of communication) of the treated subject.
