The Environmental Education as a Solid Waste Management Activity: An Analysis of the Municipal Integrated Management Plan of Campina Grande-PB

The management of solid waste has become, in recent decades, a topic of great concern for public managers from all over the planet. Increasingly, different types of waste are produced, many of which are complex to treat and dispose of. On the other hand, actions related to the prevention, generation, collection, disposal and reuse of waste have been treated sectorally, in a disjointed manner, obstructing a systemic view of the problem and reflected in fragmented public policies. In Brazil, most municipalities do not have technical and financial conditions, and some have the political will to resolve the issue of solid waste. In this perspective, this article aimed to analyze how the Environmental Education activity included in the Municipal Plan for Integrated Solid Waste Management in the municipality of Campina Grande-PB can favor the management of solid waste. The survey results show that the municipality's Plan has a range of activities, strategies, programs, projects and actions for the dissemination of environmental education in the municipality, which, therefore, can favor waste management, especially if they are effectively implemented. . Finally, it is worth noting that the Plan has not yet been implemented, only a preliminary version was approved at public hearings, and subsequently disregarded by the city council.
