Written social communication in the region of Leiria (1864 to 2015): contribution to the history of the regional coast and environmental education

Situated in the central coastal area of Portugal, the coastline of the Leiria region has been subject to the various impacts resulting from the increasing existing human pressure, as well as high rates of erosion and retreat from the coastline. Considering the regional written press as a precious testimony of the evolution of the human relationship with the coastline and, at the same time, an important educational resource, a sample of some dozens of articles published in the Leiriense press between 1864 and 2015 was built, in which mention is made of the regional coastline, as well as environmental education initiatives that were subordinate to it. Using the analysis of the content expressed in the selected articles, some environmental problems associated with the regional coast, and their causes, were identified, and it was realized how the populations, technicians and managers of different institutions understood and reacted to these problems. Using this methodology, it was possible to contribute to the recreation of the environmental history of the regional coast and the Environmental Education associated with it, showing some initiatives and projects promoted by the “Oikos - Association for the Defense of the Environment and Heritage of the Region of Leiria” and “Centro Azul do Pedrógão”, among other institutions.
