Abstract

This article presents the result of a research on strategies for the management of household solid waste in Porto Velho-RO, a city located in the Western Brazilian Amazon. It was found that the Municipality's strategies, although deliberate, are partially implemented. Noting that many citizens are not environmentally educated to contribute to changes; the concession of waste management is partially executed; separators are vulnerable to disease, as they are placed on heaped garbage; significant amounts of garbage collected in homes are being buried without any protection for the soil; the population realizes that the collection of household waste has been efficient, but is unaware that the municipal management fails in the selective collection, recycling, reuse or reuse of this waste, these steps being conditioned to the activities of collectors / separators of recyclable materials and private institutions. Currently, Porto Velho pays for the integrated management of solid waste, but the provision is emphasized in collection. The current scenario burdens its citizens and inefficiently appropriates part of the Municipality's budgetary resources. The information in this work will be able to subsidize administrators and / or specialists in solid waste management and encourage the structuring of organizations that explore these opportunities in the Municipality of Porto Velho.
