The Environmental Education as a “driving force” for the revitalization and requalification of rural areas in need

Betting on Environmental Education as a “driving force” for the revitalization and requalification of the Aldeia do Vale do Rio, located in the Central Region of Portugal, teachers from the Escola Superior Agrária de Coimbra, interns, autarchy, local community and volunteers have worked together with with a view to surveying the natural heritage, as well as solving the environmental problems of the village and surrounding areas. The population's involvement in passive and active Environmental Education actions has contributed to the valorization of native species, namely the strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo L.), as well as to the control of invasive plants, particularly Acacia dealbataL.). Integrated work has also made it possible to recognize the village's appetite for beekeeping, betting on endogenous products and ecotourism. With natural charms and strategically located 5 km from the village of Figueiró dos Vinhos and just 1 km from the River Zêzere, Aldeia do Vale do Rio already looks at itself with “eyes of the future”, now counting on the newly created “ Association of Dwellers and Friends of the Valley of Rio ”, which is already starting to work for the sustainable development of the village.
