On the defining formula action and effect of + verb: A new proposal for the lexicographic treatment of nouns of action

This article deals with the definition of deverbal substantives expressed by means of the formula action and effect of + verb in the infinitive. This definition raises both theoretical and practical problems: theoretical because, despite all appearances, said formula does not constitute a true definition, given the impossibility of alternating definiendum and definiens, and practical because, in the corresponding articles, this definition is set against others which sometimes are also attributable to that type of deverbal substantives. In order to solve these issues, a series of proposals are made which, to our judgment, could lead to a better treatment of these types of lexical units in the dictionaries.Downloads
