Fake cognates. Fake problems. An aspect of teaching Spanish in Brazil

This article takes the stand that the problem of ‘false friends’, which is at the centre of Spanish teaching to Portuguese-speaking students, is a false problem, at least when it is considered the way it mostly is. The author makes a distinction between different types of ‘false friends’ showing that the kind of ‘false cognates’ that would create more subtle problems are those that are least studied, notably, those cases in which false cognates are morphologically identical, semantically similar, but distinct in their register use.
