Social perceptions about the future of humanity on the planet: a study in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil

The work develops a study on the perceptions of Brazilians living in the city of Piracicaba, located in the interior of the state of São Paulo, in relation to environmental issues and the future of humanity on the planet. The research is being carried out through semi-structured questionnaires that are being applied in several urban spaces with a large flow of people in Piracicaba, SP. The questions proposed in the questionnaire seek to collect self-assessing data on the respondents' mood, quality of life and economic condition. The information found from the first applications of the questionnaires are being analyzed based on the theories of the future (TOFFLER, 1970; LOMBARDO, 2008; BOSTROM, 2009), perception (TUAN, 1980; CHAUÍ, 2000; HANNIGAN, 2009), the concept of paradigm (KUHN, 1970) and the environmental movement (McCORMICK, 1992; CASTELLS, 1999), so that it is possible to identify philosophical and paradigmatic bases related to the different worldviews of individuals about what will happen in the future. The results obtained so far lead us to observe that the majority of respondents presented negative perspectives in relation to the future of humanity on the planet. However, a large part believes that education may be the solution to socio-environmental problems.
