Abstract

PINUS is a local environmental protection association that aims to preserve the environment and promote pro-environmental behavior. There are numerous initiatives in environmental education that PINUS has been carrying out and, currently, it develops a program of environmental awareness activities with 4 schools of basic education in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia. The program aims to promote socio-environmental behaviors, attitudes and values, contributing to strengthen environmental education in the education system. When addressing the curriculum of the study subject in the middle of the 1st cycle of basic education, the program, through playful-pedagogical activities, explores contents such as biodiversity, food chains and pollution. As the activities progress, students reflect on environmental problems and how they affect the environment. The results of this initiative at the local level, observed either by the interest and participation of children in the activities, or by the reflections that arise during them, suggest that the initiatives of associations and other environmental institutions are essential to promote basic skills for action and to strengthen the vision of environmental education in basic education.
