Virtual Teaching and Learning Communities as a tool for implementing protected areas in Brazil

In the last five years, in order to contribute to the implementation of Brazilian conservation units in a more effective way, WWF-Brasil seeks to innovate and develop activities through services available in the so-called online social networks. The cyber space has been a tool for supporting discussion, sharing experiences and producing informative material from two different groups: Community of Teaching and Learning in Planning Conservation Units and Community of Teaching and Learning in Participatory Management of Protected Areas. In order to overcome the geographical barriers peculiar to Brazil and to systematize experiences, WWF-Brasil, in partnership with other non-governmental organizations and government agencies, has been deepening the themes of 'participatory management' and 'elaboration of a management plan', with the objective of contribute to the implementation of Brazilian conservation units in a more effective way. The work is centered on two virtual teaching and learning communities that address these two themes. In both, the operating system occurs through face-to-face meetings, one or two a year, and in online discussions, using free services available, such as Google Doc.
