Geocaching, the treasure hunt in the 21st century: crossings between the virtual and the real to meet education for sustainable development

This article is part of the agendas that bring to discussion the problem of reinventing leisure in today's globalized modernity and the way in which the centrality and penetrability of information and communication technologies and their articulation with environmental and sustainable development issues have revolutionized leisure practices, leading to the emergence and expansion of new activities. The objective is to place geocaching in the context of these processes of recomposition and change that are expressed in new demands for leisure in contemporary times. Inscribed in the addition of digital literacy and the use of mobile geotechnologies, geocaching embodies a dualized practice that implies crossings between virtual and real spaces, an adventure game that in search of treasure brings man back to nature. As a product associated with increased physical activity in the context of a new body culture and healthy lifestyles, the search for outdoor activities and the myth of returning to nature, the growing attraction for adventure and risk and under the domain of sustainability ethics, geocaching asserts itself as a tool in education for sustainable development.
