Abstract

The extension course “Sustainability in the Context of Sciences”, offered in the distance modality, aimed to train 300 teachers of Natural Sciences from the perspective of Environmental Education. From the UN international conferences on sustainable development, themes systematized in the following menu were selected: Environmental problems; Scientific development and sustainable development; Carrying capacity of the planet and ecological footprint; Biodiversity; Transgenic foods; Persistent pollutants; Solid waste; Recycling of materials; Environmental sustainability; Environmental Education in Science teaching. The production of teaching materials for the course followed the principles of Ecopedagogy, which considers the complex relationships between sciences, society and the environment. The activities aimed at scientific literacy on environmental benefits and burdens of technological development. The performance of the course participants was assessed in each of the proposed activities and in a final work on global environmental problems and sustainable solutions. The best works were published in co-authorships in the electronic magazine “Educação Pública”, of the Cecierj Foundation. The search for educational practices necessary to deconstruct old behaviors and to build new ethical attitudes towards the environment revealed new paths for the conduct of Environmental Education. The course was enriched with multimedia tools from distance learning platforms.
