Challenges of Environmental Education in the recovery of a spring: the meaning of human action in the preservation of the environment

Abstract

This study sought to focus its attention on the intention to preserve Ribeirão Santa Maria as a source of water supply in Novo Gama, State of Goiás. poorly planned, waste deposition, occupation and degradation of permanent preservation areas, deforestation, land grabbing along its course. The action research developed was aimed at seeking the contribution of local communities, through community environmental education activities aimed at cultural and social changes aimed at the sustainable use of the waters of the stream and improvements in the quality of life of the communities. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, questionnaires and meetings. The results showed that the occupation process significantly influenced the local environmental degradation. Most participants still believe in reversing local degradation through an educational process that involves residents and educational institutions in collective actions for the purpose of conservation and the preservation of the stream as a Common Good and engaged in the continuity of collective actions for the recovery of its waters.
