Abstract

School physical education is one of the fields of study that have received the least attention when dealing with the historical background and origins of football in Spain. On this consideration, the object of study of this article is to initiate a historical review on this question. The inclusion of football as part of Gymnastics lessons at the Palma de Mallorca secondary school, on the initiative of the teacher Adolfo Fernández Revuelta, provides an opportunity to extrapolate this situation to other schools and colleges in the country. A historical document-based study and a constructivist interpretation of events lead to the firm conclusion that secondary schooling was a decisive factor in the emerging popularity of football among Spanish youth at the start of the 20th century.
