Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyse the effect of relative age in relation on soccer players from LaLiga Santander U23 teams, its influence on the different demarcations and the relationship with the promotion of U23 team players to professional soccer clubs. Players (n=438), of 20 U23 teams were analysed during the 2018-2019 season and those players who reached to play in an elite club in the following 3 seasons were counted. To analyse the effect of relative age, the Chi Cuadrado statistical test was used to compare the distribution of the months of the year by quarters and semesters according to the month of birth of the players. The results showed significant differences (p <0.05) in the comparison of the number of players who reached the elite according to the trimesters or semesters of the year positive to soccer players born in the first months of the year. These results show how both the players who play in U23 teams and those who came to play at a high level in the following 3 years were conditioned by the effect of relative age, so, by the month of their birth. As for the demarcation, only the goalkeepers were not influenced by the effect of the RAE. In this sense, the influence of relative age on the percentage of players who come to play in U23 teams and at high level is evidenced.
