Abstract

We discuss ideas to help select the correct trade-off between noise amplification and performance in PID controllers. A fixed structure model, which characterizes overdamped systems well, is used, using the ratio L/τ as the main parameter. The fixed robustness tuning line is used in the analysis. A graph comparing the relative changes in noise amplification and performance (IAE), referenced to the optimal PI, is presented, showing some properties of these changes as a function of the process. A graph showing the changes in noise amplification and performance (IAE), but referenced to the controller with amplification 1, is also presented, clearly displaying the actuator fluctuation as a function of the controller, and the effect on performance improvement. The L/τ value is related to the selection of the trade-off between noise amplification and performance, and three designs are proposed, considering the model, the measurement noise, and the actuator sensitivity.
