This work reflects the prior knowledge of a group of students who attend the 1st cycle (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th years of schooling) at schools in Travasso, Escoural, Gualdim Pais and São Simão de Litém and a group of students with specific needs who attend the Learning Support Center at the headquarters school of the group, in the municipality of Pombal, Portugal, on the subject of exotic, invasive and native species from the region of Pombal, as well as that of associated environmental problems. At the methodological level, the present work was based on the survey and analysis of the students’ answers given to a survey, involving questions associated with the theme of exotic, invasive and native species in the region of Pombal. After analyzing them, it is concluded that the knowledge presented by the students in the answers to the survey reflects a low level of literacy in this subject, as well as some lack of knowledge in the eradication of invasive species and commercial regulations in force for the import and sale of exotic species. In view of the students’ responses, it was perceived the need to implement an environmental project based on awareness actions, both theoretical and practical, and aimed at voluntary participation by students in the promotion and dissemination of the theme in the surrounding community. Thus, throughout the 2022/2023 school year, a project on exotic, invasive and native species will be developed in the region of Pombal with students from the same schools, with the support of the Municipality of Pombal and other researchers from the central region of Portugal specialized in theme, in order to lead society to value ecosystem sustainability practices that put an end to the gradual de-characterization of our landscape and the degradation of regional flora and fauna, and also with the intention of cooperating in the integration of this theme in school curricula. In this way, the urgency was felt to urge the whole of society to actively participate in solving the problems associated with exotic and invasive species and to introduce this theme in the «Domains of Curricular Autonomy» (DAC), areas of confluence of interdisciplinary work and/or curricular articulation and school curricula.
