Environmental education, perceptions and practices: a case study in schools in Amarante-Pi, Brazil

Environmental education is a continuous and extensive process of learning, it is sought that society, school and family unite, forming a tripod in the construction of knowledge about environmental issues. Educating requires dedication and at the school level it must be followed considering concepts, theories to promote efficient environmental education. Thus, there is a need for the educator to adopt a critical and reflective stance, in practices that teach education based on the environment, in order to sensitize students. This work aims to identify environmental education practices in elementary education regarding the efficiency of the methodology used and its influence on the different conceptions of the environment by the student. A qualitative and quantitative methodology was used, where the results showed that the investigated students from both schools mostly have a naturalistic view of the concept of the environment and consider the place where they live as an integral part of the environment. Following the example of the investigated schools, it can be concluded that Environmental Education is indeed an important strategy in the transformation of environmental awareness, but for it to be developed efficiently, the participation of the school, society and public authorities is necessary.
