The Pro-Mata Nature Research and Conservation Center is a protected area belonging to the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, located in the Municipality of São Francisco de Paula (RS). With great scenic beauty in its more than three thousand hectares, its primary objective is conservation and environmental research. It receives groups of students, professors and researchers from this university and other higher education institutions. The opening of the site to different users such as students of Basic Education in the municipality and PUCRS employees is diversifying the use of space and demonstrating its possibilities. This research aimed to identify and analyze the environmental perception of different groups that attended the place between 2012 and 2013. Through the analysis of open questionnaires and participant observation of the groups, it was possible to attest that in addition to meeting expectations of the pedagogical proposals, and to be a place that provides multiple environment-person interactions, Pró-Mata allows the experience of a sensitizing aesthetic experience. This experience can offer environmental education to overcome the extreme rationalization imposed by modern thought, which has weakened the poetics and the imaginary, insofar as it is capable of awakening an ethics built by opening up to the experiences of being in-the-world.
