Self-perceived motor competence and physical activity in adolescents: differences by weight status
Main Article Content
Abstract
Identifying the factors related to physical activity (PA) and the underlying mechanisms that foster engagement during adolescence is necessary to promote an active lifestyle. The main objective of this study was to analyze self-perceived motor competence and physical activity practice in normal-weight and overweight secondary school students. A total of 886 adolescents aged 12 to 15 years enrolled in urban and rural schools in the Autonomous Community of Aragon were evaluated. Of these, 478 (53.95%) were boys and 404 (46.05%) were girls. The mean age was 13.75 years (SD = 1.28). The AMPET4 Test was used for self-perceived motor competence, and three indicators from the WHO Health Behaviour in Schoolchildren survey (Spanish version) were used to analyze physical activity practice. The 2007 WHO guidelines were followed to establish the weight groups. Differences between the weight groups in the two variables were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Regarding the study of self-perceived motor competence, the results showed significant differences between normal-weight and overweight students. Concerning the physical activity practice variable, significant differences were observed in favor of normal-weight students compared to only the obese group. By gender, no differences were found in physical activity practice among girls. The importance of considering body weight in the design of interventions aimed at promoting active lifestyles is highlighted.
