Simulation of automation and control systems in substations under IEC 61850.

Abstract

This paper proposes a simulation environment for automation and control systems in substations based on the IEC 61850 standard. The developed environment implements the three levels: process, bay, and substation. Merging Units and electrical switchgear are emulated on the CMC850 device, virtual protection relays are implemented in the OPAL-RT real-time simulator, and monitoring and operation are carried out from a Zenon SCADA system. The environment allows the generation and exchange of SV, GOOSE, and MMS messages, replicating the communication between the three levels. Using this environment, an automation and control system for a step-down substation with two feeders has been simulated. To verify the behavior and operating sequence of the protection and control devices and to analyze the generated SV, GOOSE, and MMS messages, the article presents two fault scenarios: overcurrent in one feeder and a short circuit in the transformer's primary winding.
