Abstract

This work is part of the actions of the Environmental Education Project for the Conservation and Management of Water Resources in the Gravataí River Basin, carried out by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and by the Management Committee of the River Gravataí Basin aiming the training of teachers in Environmental Education (EA) in the municipalities belonging to the Hydrographic Basin. The objective of the course was to provide subsidies to teachers regarding the elaboration of projects based on the principles of EA and to deepen knowledge about ecology and sustainability in the hydrographic basin, among others. The teachers carried out research together with their students in the school environment and its surroundings, with the intention of developing environmental education projects. The work project methodology contributed to thinking about caring for the environment, sustainability, solidarity, creativity, complexity and citizenship. The organization of work projects in EE made it possible to reflect on daily life and its different socio-environmental and cultural contexts. It contributes to the elaboration of contextualized activities, it valued the students' learning process, it provided the learning by knowing how to do and how to do it, as well as the approximation of the school routine to the environment surrounding the schools.
