Abstract

The notion of social capital has a long tradition in sociological and political studies. In recent years there has been some revitalization of the debate about its scope and the most appropriate mechanisms for its operationalization. Following the classic works of Bourdieu (1980), Coleman (1990) and Granovetter (1995), more recently is found in the international sociological production, an interesting theoretical and empirical accumulation, especially from the developments of Lin (2001) and Burt (2005). In this paper we present a tour of the conceptual discussion about the scope of this construct, then explore some of the methodological developments for its measurement, and finally an example with data for the Uruguayan case is presented
