Autonomy and leadership as predictors of personal and social responsibility in Mexican adolescents: differences according to vulnerability context

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship and predictive power of autonomy and leadership on Personal and Social Responsibility (PSR) among Mexican adolescents who practice sports in vulnerable and non-vulnerable contexts, as well as to examine differences in PSR levels according to vulnerability context. A total of 469 adolescents (females n = 135; males n = 334), aged between 12 and 18 years (M = 14.2; SD = 2.1), participated in the study. All participants were enrolled in municipal sports programs in the metropolitan area of Monterrey, Mexico. Validated instruments were administered to assess autonomy, leadership, and personal and social responsibility. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, Spearman correlations, hierarchical multiple regression, and mediation analyses using bootstrapping (5,000 samples) were conducted.
The results showed significant differences according to context, with higher levels of social responsibility among adolescents from vulnerable areas (U = 10,982.00, p = .032). Autonomy (β = .36, p < .001) and leadership (β = .22, p = .014) were positively associated with personal and social responsibility, explaining 18% of its variance (R² = .18). In addition, leadership acted as a partial mediator in the relationship between autonomy and responsibility (a×b = .05, 95% CI [.02, .09]).
In conclusion, the findings indicate that autonomy and leadership are relevant variables for explaining personal and social responsibility among Mexican adolescents, particularly in contexts of social vulnerability, reinforcing the relevance of the Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility Model as a pedagogical framework in sports programs.
