Abstract

The comparative research was focused on the psychomotor development of preschool children living in the northern area of Colombia, taking into account some factors such as sex, their socio-economic condition and the environment (urban-rural). The sample included 447 children aged between 33 and 42 months (Mean = 36.50; Standard Deviation = 3.74), with an equal distribution between boys (48.1%) and girls (51.9%). The Ages and Stages Questionnaire-3 and the SISBEN were used to evaluate their development and socio-economic condition, respectively.  It was found that there were no significant gender differences in communication, although girls showed better performance in other areas such as motor skills, problem solving and socio-individual skills. Children classified as non-vulnerable showed higher scores in all areas compared to those in the poverty and vulnerability condition.  Similarly, it was found that children from urban environments outperformed those from rural contexts in psychomotor development. These findings highlighted the influence of socio-economic condition and environment in children's psychomotor development. It was emphasized the relevance of public policies aimed at promoting the psychomotor development, especially within poor areas during the early ages of children.  This research highlights the need to address inequalities in children's neurodevelopment and the importance of providing resources and appropriate support to ensure optimal development in all children, regardless of their socio-economic context or geographical location.
