Abstract

Both, the schooling of students with disabilities in mainstream schools and the introduction of new sports are challenges that must be addressed in inclusive school. In this context, students with intellectual disabilities require special attention. This article focuses on a class with 22 adolescents, including one boy with Down syndrome. The aim was to find out whether it is possible to use taekwondo to develop motor skills in this context. To this end, considering the individual features of the student with Down syndrome and the curriculum, a teaching unit was prepared, and motor development was measured pre and post test. Agility was measured with the performance in an obstacle course test and balance and coordination were assessed with the Observation of Motor Competence Scale. The results show that all students improved motor development, although in the pretest and post test phases the student with Down syndrome had a lower level of performance than their non-disabled peers in all measurements. The results show that all pupils engaged in the taekwondo and improved motor skills. The study concludes that taekwondo is a suitable sport to work on the curriculum content of inclusive physical education sessions.
