Abstract

Adolescent physical inactivity poses a significant public health challenge, contributing to increased risks of obesity, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disorders. This study investigates factors influencing teenagers' physical exercise behavior in a selected province in the Philippines and proposes an intervention program to enhance youth physical activity. Utilizing a descriptive-correlational research design, data was collected from 500 respondents through structured questionnaires and fitness assessments. Results showed that while most respondents had a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI) (mean = 24.6), their cardiovascular fitness (mean Rockport Test time = 28 minutes) and muscular strength (mean push-ups = 4 reps) were below average, indicating poor aerobic capacity and upper body strength. Despite these fitness limitations, adolescents reported strong engagement in physical activity, particularly in daily routines (weighted mean = 4.21) and structured workouts (weighted mean = 4.15). Awareness of exercise benefits (mean = 4.33) emerged as the most influential motivator. Family support (mean = 3.64) and school-organized activities (mean = 3.66) significantly enhanced participation. Pearson’s correlation revealed a significant positive relationship between health status and exercise behavior (r = 0.421, p = 0.002), and between exercise behavior and interactive influences (r = 0.398, p = 0.005). Findings support the development of a multi-component intervention integrating school-based physical education, family-centered activities, and community support to improve adolescent fitness and establish lifelong physical activity habits. The results underscore the need for comprehensive strategies targeting not just individual motivation but also social and environmental enablers of adolescent health
