Abstract

Thermal comfort is one of the most important concepts for ensuring human acceptance and the proper development of activities in indoor environments. This article addresses the problem of automatically calculating radiant temperature inside a building as the most important factor for empirically determining thermal comfort. The presented methodology is based on information provided by an omnidirectional thermal scanning system, which is subsequently processed to obtain the desired value of the Mean Radiant Temperature (MRT). The article presents the formal definition of MRT, the processing stages followed, and the results obtained from seven sessions in which a room occupied by a small number of workers was scanned. The results indicate that this automatic method can provide advantages in terms of speed, accuracy, and scene information compared with manual calculation methods.
