Abstract

This study constitutes the first evaluation of the types of initiatives being carried out in the health and physical activity promotion centres in the Valencian Community, as well as the possible differences according to various socio-demographic variables. A sample of 256 coordinators of programmes developed during the 2021/2022 academic year took part in the study. The most frequently offered institutional programmes were ‘Pilota a l'escola’ (61.6%), ‘Esport a l'escola’ (48.1%) and ‘Aula ciclista’ (35.4%), while among the internal initiatives, ‘Active Outings’ (57.1%), ‘Physical-Sports days’ (44.8%) and ‘Active playgrounds’ (41%) stood out. With the exception of the institutional programme ‘Aula ciclista’ and the internal initiative ‘Quality Physical Education’, the remaining programmes and initiatives were affected by some socio-demographic characteristics of the schools. Among the variables that most influenced the implementation of these programmes and initiatives were the size of the school and the educational stage offered (p<.05). The only variable that did not reveal significant differences was the type of school day (intensive/with midday-break). On the other hand, the implementation of the ‘Pilota a l'escola’ programme was most affected by the characteristics of the schools, specifically by the type of the school, the educational stage, the number of pupils in the school and the number of residents in the town (p<.05). In conclusion, the implementation of institutional programmes and school-specific initiatives promoting school physical activity is affected by their socio-demographic characteristics, with this effect varying depending on the type of initiative.
