Among the behavioural factors associated with motivation and academic performance, both recreational and systematic physical activity has been shown to be relevant. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between physical activity, sports and motivation, and academic performance. A total of 415 students (210 females) from integrated secondary and technical education institutions took part in the study. Sports participation and physical activity levels were measured using the short version of the IPAQ, academic motivation was assessed using the EMAPRE scale, and academic performance was evaluated based on grades in Portuguese and mathematics. Correlations between the variables were obtained and statistically significant outcomes were then submitted to multiple linear regression analysis to assess the explanatory potential of the independent variables. The results revealed a significant correlation between moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and motivation for meta-learning among females, as well as between MVPA and Portuguese performance among males. Regression analysis showed that MVPA predicts these outcomes by 18% and 16%, respectively. This research shows that there is a relationship, although moderate, between MVPA and aspects of motivation and academic performance in secondary school students. Based on these findings, it is suggested that educational institutions increase the time and opportunities for physical activity (such as extracurricular activities), highlighting the essential role of Physical Education in raising awareness about the benefits of this practice beyond health, including motivation and academic performance.
