Reviews guidelines

All manuscripts submitted for publication must comply with the style guidelines of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Seventh Edition, 2020 on format (headings, tables, figures, etc.), reporting statistics and references. As an exception to the APA guidelines, the References section should include authors’ surname and full first name as cited in the published source. (Author names cited as initials should be found and completed.) For more information, see Authors’ area >> Manuscript format >> References.

The writing should be impersonal, and the language used should be inclusive and non-sexist. For more information, see Authors' Area >> Inclusive and non-sexist language.

The aim of a review is to provide readers unfamiliar with the reviewed work with a clear and complete summary of its contents and merits. Manuscripts will be considered for reviews of books, PhD theses, audiovisual material or computer applications published in print or online in the past two years.

Word limit: max. 1500 words, min. 900 words.

Review manuscripts should be uploaded in ".docx" format. As a separate attachment, authors should include a high-resolution digital image of the front cover and a PDF with the back cover, editorial data and table of contents (in the case of books) or other identifying images (for other types of publications or resources). This supplementary material should be uploaded during the submission process using the Other option from the ‘Article component’ dropdown menu.

Review manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the guidelines regarding fonts, headings, tables, figures, references, etc. found in the Authors’ area "Manuscript format" y "How to sign" sections.

FIRST PAGE

     Should include:

     Information about the reviewed item:

  • Title (book, thesis, audiovisual material or application, published physically or online in the previous two years). Do not use bold or uppercase letters except for the first letter and for proper nouns.
  • Translation of title (Spanish or Portuguese)
  • • Author name(s): Name Surname*, Name Surname**, …
  • *Institutional affiliation: institution, city, country
  • Bibliographic information: Publisher, year of publication. Total number of pages. ISBN.
  • URL of reviewed item (if applicable).

     Information about the authors of the review:

  • Name Surname + ORCID (authors who do not have an ORCID may register for one at https://orcid.org/)
  • Full institutional affiliation of each author (max. three levels of hierarchy, e.g. department, faculty, university) and URL of faculty, school or institute. Do not include academic titles or positions.
  • Name and email address of contact author.

SECOND PAGE

- Suggest two experts in the field as possible peer reviewers, including the following details: Name and Surname, university or institution, email, ORCID.
  The experts proposed should have no relationship with the authors or with the research on which the manuscript is based.

THIRD PAGE

Should only include: the title of the reviewed item (in two languages, one to be English) and the word count for the review.

FOURTH PAGE

     Should include:

Abstract
Abstracts should consist of a single, unindented paragraph (max. 120 words) and be written in a non-bold font. The abstract should provide a simple, concise summary of the main idea of the review.

Keywords: 3-5 concepts, written in lowercase and separated by commas. Keywords should be based on terms from the APA (PsycINFO) and ERIC thesauruses.

Reviews in English should also include an abstract and keywords in Spanish or Portuguese.

REST OF MANUSCRIPT

          All paragraphs should be indented 1.25 cm and double-line spaced, with no additional line spacing between paragraphs. As an exception, tables should be unindented and single-line spaced.

          Reviews should include the following sections: a) identification (subject area, author’s profile in relation to the reviewed matter); b) summary (purpose, structure and content of review), and c) assessment (critical opinion of the reviewer, strengths and weaknesses of the work). These sections should not be marked by headings. However, any headings the authors do use should be written and formatted according the APA style.

         Quoted text should be included as follows: a) for short quotations of fewer than 40 words, add quotation marks around the words and incorporate the quotation into the main text; b) for quotations comprising 40 words or more, format the text as a free-standing block with a 2.5 cm indent and omit quotation marks. All quotations should be double-spaced. Cite the source (author, year) and page number of the quotation in brackets after the quotation. Quotations from sources in other languages should be translated into the language of the manuscript. For translated quotations, the source information and page number should be preceded by the phrase “translated from:”

          Tables and figures included in the review should be embedded in the text and follow the APA guidelines for tables and figures. Decimals in tables, figures and the rest of the text should be marked using a point (not a comma). The decimal point should not be preceded by a zero in numbers which cannot be greater than 1.

References

The References section is an essential part of the manuscript. Any mistakes in format or content may impact negatively on the manuscript’s chances of publication. Authors are advised to read the detailed referencing guidelines provided in Authors’ area >> Manuscript format >> References.
